Hohensalzburg Fortress
Hohensalzburg - a castle with history
Hohensalzburg Fortress has towered over the city since 1077. What once began as a simple defensive structure developed over the centuries into the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. Not a single attacker has ever been able to take it – an impressive testimony to medieval architecture and strategic planning.
From defense facility to cultural site
Over the course of time, the fortress has not only served military purposes. It was the residence of the prince archbishops, barracks, prison and is now a living museum. Cultural life pulsates here, especially in the summer months – for example at concerts, exhibitions or the renowned International Summer Academy.
Way to Hohensalzburg Fortress
If you would like to visit the fortress, you can either take the picturesque footpath from Kapitelplatz or take the comfortable fortress train. Both paths offer wonderful views of Salzburg’s old town and the surrounding area. The walk takes around 15 minutes and leads directly into the heart of the castle complex.
What awaits you at the fortress
Particularly popular with visitors are the state rooms of the prince archbishops, the Fortress Museum, the Rainer Regimental Museum and the Marionette Museum. The fortifications and the so-called “torture chamber” are also part of the tour. And those who like to enjoy themselves can do so in the castle restaurants with a view of the old town.
An ideal starting point for a walk along the Mönchsberg
Hohensalzburg Fortress is also a perfect starting or finishing point for a walk across the Mönchsberg. From here you can reach other highlights such as the Museum der Moderne, which also offers a spectacular view over the city.
