Authentic, traditional, and homely – the Christmas market at the Cathedral is likely one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. The festive decoration of the marketplace and the surrounding streets immerse visitors in a magical world. The historic stalls and traditional craftsmanship tell a unique story, making the Salzburg Christmas Market a special experience for all.

For those who don’t fancy a large Christmas market but still want to enjoy the peaceful pre-Christmas atmosphere, the market in front of Mirabell Palace is a great alternative. It has always enchanted visitors with its romantic ambiance and tranquility. Of course, hearty culinary delights are also well provided for! Highly recommended: grilled sausages with sauerkraut.

The pre-Christmas feeling starts even on the way to the fortress. Over a hundred traditional Herrnhuter stars transform the fortress street into a sea of lights. Another highlight of the market is the stunning view of Salzburg, as the fortress sits more than 100 meters above the city. When the trombones of the tower musicians sound, the atmosphere becomes even more magical.

What makes the Hellbrunn Christmas market special is the oversized Advent calendar, which stretches across 24 windows of the castle facade. The illuminated Christmas angel in the castle park is also a true highlight. Not only children love the fairy-tale forest with 700 fir trees decorated with red balls and the Christmas world featuring campfires, puppet theater, children’s bakery, and storytellers. In addition, a petting zoo with donkeys, goats, and miniature pigs awaits, along with a stunning nativity scene exhibition in the castle chapel.

Perhaps the best Christmas market for handicrafts in Salzburg is the Glanegg Farm Advent Market. Here, visitors can find hand-knitted hats, socks, and gloves, as well as wood, ceramic, and glass art, herb blends, and liqueurs. If homemade mulled wine or punch isn’t enough, a small wooden fire in the middle of the courtyard invites you to warm up.
