Getreidegasse in the Heart of Salzburg

The Most Famous Street in Mozart’s City

A visit to Salzburg is not complete without a stroll through its most famous and charming street. Exclusive shops, cozy cafés, and renowned names define the Getreidegasse. Most notably, of course, it is the birthplace of Mozart.

What Makes Getreidegasse So Special?

Historically speaking: its location! As early as Roman times, it served as a trade route into what is now Bavaria. Situated between the Salzach River and Mönchsberg, it became the city’s primary trading hub. The nobility and high-ranking officials settled here, enhancing the street’s prestige and giving rise to some of Salzburg’s most famous sons and daughters.

Mozart’s Birthplace in Getreidegasse

The unique charm of Getreidegasse is immediately visible in the many elaborately designed, often historic shop signs. As part of Salzburg’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, even new businesses must adhere to this traditional signage style.

The Hidden Courtyards of the Passageways

Another special feature is the numerous passageways leading in both directions. These arcades hide delightful surprises: cafés, boutique stores, and picturesque courtyards invite visitors to linger and explore, regardless of the weather. In the past, these passageways also played a practical role in cleaning the street—water from the Almkanal was released at the top, flushing debris down through the courtyards and into the Salzach River.
