As Austria’s largest independent ensemble theater, the Schauspielhaus Salzburg delights audiences with around ten drama productions and one children’s play per season. Plays are performed almost daily from September to the beginning of July in two theaters, not far from the old town in the historic Petersbrunnhof.

The Schauspielhaus sees theater as an “act of resistance against the loss of education, de-democratization and commercialization” – and implements this goal with outstanding, often socially critical productions.

From ancient tragedy and classical drama to modern comedy and experimental forms – the Schauspielhaus Salzburg offers a broad spectrum. In addition to established works, the focus is on first and world premieres as well as the promotion of young artists. The offer is complemented by an affiliated drama school and a publishing house for children’s musicals.

With 10-14 in-house productions a year, the Schauspielhaus is one of the most productive independent theaters in Austria.

The theater is housed in the Petersbrunnhof, a former estate of St. Peter’s Abbey, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. The lovingly renovated building in the Nonntal district is located directly below Hohensalzburg Fortress and has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology – a harmonious combination of past and present.
