Discover the Sound of Music film set in Salzburg

Few films have made Salzburg as famous as The Sound of Music (German title: Meine Lieder – meine Träume), the 1965 Hollywood classic starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The movie, based on a true story, was filmed at original locations in and around Salzburg.

The official Sound of Music Tour takes you to the most iconic filming sites while showcasing Salzburg’s highlights and the stunning Salzkammergut region.

Sightseeing tour through Salzburg and the Salzkammergut

The tour starts at Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children danced around the Pegasus Fountain while singing Do-Re-Mi. The next stop is Leopoldskron Palace, which was used as the Trapp family’s home. At Hellbrunn Palace, you’ll find the reconstructed glass pavilion from the Sixteen Going on Seventeen scene.

Passing by Nonnberg Abbey, where Maria and the Baron married in 1927, the tour continues to Lake Fuschl and St. Gilgen at Lake Wolfgang – famous for the breathtaking opening scenes. The final stop is Mondsee, home to the church where the wedding scenes were filmed

During the journey, you’ll hear the most famous Sound of Music songs, and a small surprise gift awaits you.

Sound of Music – The Musical in Salzburg

After over 2,000 performances on Broadway and 2,400 in London, the musical returned to its roots in 2011, premiering at Salzburg’s Landestheater.

For the film’s 50th anniversary in 2015, a special exhibition titled “Illusion, Reality, and the Third Reich” was held at the former Villa Trapp in Salzburg-Aigen. In 2022 and 2023, the musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein returned to the Landestheater’s stage.
